Prof. Christian Doerig

Prof. Christian Doerig

Professor Christian Doerig is a Partner of PCRi.

Christian obtained his PhD in molecular virology at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. After a post-doc on herpesvirus latency, he pioneered the study of phosphosignalling in the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, and is a recognised leader in this field. He initiated and coordinated several large EU-funded international consortia in malaria research which involved partners in Europe, India and Africa. His current research interests include the host cell signaling response to various intracellular pathogens, including (in addition to malaria parasites) viruses such as Hepatitis C virus, Influenza virus and Coronavirus, with the purpose of developing Host-Directed Therapy against infectious diseases based on kinase inhibition.

He established the first international Inserm units in the UK at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology (Glasgow), and subsequently in Switzerland at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). In 2011, he was recruited as Head of the Department of Microbiology at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. In 2019 joined RMIT University (Melbourne) as Associate Dean for the Biomedical Sciences Cluster at RMIT University (2019-2021), where he pursues his research on the kinomics of infection systems.

He currently holds a Full Professor position at RMIT University. He is “Directeur de Recherches” at the French government biomedical research agency Inserm (on secondment), Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow, Adjunct Professor at Monash University and holds an Honorary position at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne.
